[00:00:00] Carrie Lupoli: So I just spent $347 on the top 10 weight loss supplements, so you don't have to. And what I discovered as a nutritionist with 25 years of experience is gonna really piss off a lot of people in the supplement industry. Some of these got a one out of 10; probably should have gotten actually a zero. Um, and I'm actually gonna be throwing a few of them away.

[00:00:23] Carrie Lupoli: So today I am rating these 10 supplements from a one to 10 using. Kind of this criteria that the supplement industry does not want you to know about, because here's what they don't tell you. Even if a supplement helps you lose like five pounds in a month, it's destroying your metabolism, spiking your cortisol, setting you up for a rebound, like gain another 20 pounds back.

[00:00:53] Carrie Lupoli: I am Carrie Lupoli. I'm a nutritionist and behavior specialist. With over 25 years of experience, I have helped thousands of women [00:01:00] break free from the diet cycle, and I am so over the BS of the diet industry. Included in that industry are these weight loss supplements. But today I'm gonna teach you a whole other kind of bs, the kind that actually works.

[00:01:16] Carrie Lupoli: Now, I'm not here to sell you anything. I don't have an affiliate with any of these supplements. I am not sponsored by any of these companies. In fact, after today's video, some of them probably won't. Anything to do with me. That's exactly how I like it. What I'm going to show you, though, is how to stop being the passenger in your own airplane when it comes to your health, because for too long we've been sitting back, letting the weight loss industry tell us what we need.

[00:01:41] Carrie Lupoli: And the truth is your body already knows exactly what it needs. You just need to learn how to listen to it. And so, let me say this, it's not that I don't like supplements. In fact, I teach the six spinning plates. Nutrition movement, hydration, managing your stress, [00:02:00] sleep, and supplementation. Supplements are a part of supplementation, so are things like sauna or cold plunge or things like that.

[00:02:10] Carrie Lupoli: The supplements are gap fillers. They fill the gaps from those other foundational plates that I say have to be spinning like a pole, like you know, like in the circus or in a carnival when you see somebody spinning plates. That's like what I'm talking about here. And when it comes to our health, it's not just like a meal plan or a supplement; it's actually being able to learn how to spin.

[00:02:32] Carrie Lupoli: All of them. And very often when you get one plate spinning, another one plate spinning, like if you get your kind of nutrition on par to really understand how to balance your blood sugar and fuel your body correctly, then your sleep gets better. Your stress often gets more managed, so they kind of work together.

[00:02:49] Carrie Lupoli: But when it comes to the weight loss industry, trying to sell us supplements as kind of the holy grail, that's why I have a problem. So buckle up because we're about to [00:03:00] expose some uncomfortable truths, and by the end of this video, you are going to understand why 90% of people fail at weight loss, and it has nothing to do with willpower.

[00:03:09] Carrie Lupoli: So, before I start destroying your supplement cabinet, you need to understand how I'm reading these because most supplement reviews you see online, they're just, they're garbage. They're often made up. They only look at one thing. Did people lose weight in the short term? And that is it. And a lot of diets are gonna let you lose weight in the short term, but they're not actually designed for your body to thrive or for you to be able to do for the rest of your life.

[00:03:34] Carrie Lupoli: And then they make you feel like it was your fault. But. Here's what I look at as a nutritionist who actually cares about your long-term health, and remember, the weight loss industry has you believing that weight loss is a goal that if you could go after weight loss, you're getting to the root.

[00:03:51] Carrie Lupoli: You're not weight gain and stubborn weight loss is a symptom. It's a symptom of your health or your hormones, or a combination of both. [00:04:00] We actually gotta get to the root cause. Weight loss is a symptom. So lemme talk to you a little bit about criteria first. My first criteria is safety. This is going, is this gonna like mess with your hormones, your heart, your sleep?

[00:04:12] Carrie Lupoli: Because news flash, if you're a woman over 35, your hormones are, they're already doing enough without adding rocket fuel to that fire. Number two, sustainability. Can you take this supplement for the rest of your life without side effects? Because if you can't, then what happens when you stop? Number three, root cause.

[00:04:31] Carrie Lupoli: Does this actually address why you gained weight in the first place, or is it just putting a bandaid on a broken leg and if it's coming from the weight loss industry, promising weight loss versus health, I usually say that is a red flag. Number four, does this actually contribute to your overall health?

[00:04:52] Carrie Lupoli: Does it support your energy, your mood, your sleep, your hormones? Or does it just focus on that number on the scale while everything else falls apart? [00:05:00] Okay. And then number five for criteria is cost effectiveness. You could spend a ridiculous amount of money on supplements. So are you getting real value or are you literally just peeing out your money?

[00:05:11] Carrie Lupoli: So here's the thing. This is. They might blow your mind. The supplement industry is a $50 billion a year industry, $50 billion. Okay. That's not even including the weight loss industry. And so often these are combined. Okay. But the supplement industry, now, I, I'm gonna be really clear. I actually own a supplement line.

[00:05:34] Carrie Lupoli: Like I, it's not that I hate supplements, I. Despise the weight loss industry that has supplements that try to sell you snake oil and all of the snake oil has a 90% failure rate for long-term results. So this, this industry with such abysmal results, it keeps growing. It keeps growing. And it does because it's like, well, if that one doesn't [00:06:00] work, then.

[00:06:00] Carrie Lupoli: Let's just try this one and then if that one doesn't work, let's just try that one. It's, it's the same genius marketing by the weight loss industry, by the diet industry. I used to fall for it too. I remember being my thirties, spending like $200 a month on supplements and. If you know my story, you know, I was gaining weight.

[00:06:18] Carrie Lupoli: I was afraid of food. My kids started talking about calories when they were five and six years old. I was tired all the time. I literally would bring a pot of coffee with me to work because I just thought it was cheaper than just going to keep and going, getting more coffee at the coffee shop. I had brain fog, but I kept thinking, maybe I need to try a different brand.

[00:06:37] Carrie Lupoli: Maybe I need to take more. It never occurred to me that the supplements themselves were actually part of the problem, that they're supplemental. Most of them aren't actually helping. All right, so let's start with the supplements that make me want to throw my nutrition certification out the window. And trust me, if you are taking any of these, I don't want you to feel bad.

[00:06:57] Carrie Lupoli: And that's what's so important. There's no shaming your, it's just, it's no [00:07:00] guilt, just data. I used to take some of these, uh, like it was like my job, but now that I know more, I can do more. And that's the same for you. When you know better, you can do better. I'm not gonna actually talk about all the supplements I really love.

[00:07:17] Carrie Lupoli: I actually just sort of like went through a whole bunch of supplements that I have been getting asked a about a lot lately that were solely focused or marketed on weight loss. There's a lot of other ones out there that I do take and that I love and that's focused on health. But I am going after, right now, the ones that claim weight loss.

[00:07:38] Carrie Lupoli: So the, the first one, and I'm gonna go in order of like my ratings. Okay. So fat burners, thermogenics, I see this everywhere. In fact, there was one supplement company that I actually kind of liked and that I would recommend some of their products with, and then they, they, uh, released a fat burner thermogenic, and I was like.

[00:07:58] Carrie Lupoli: I'm all done with you now [00:08:00] because I, you gotta follow a philosophy of health versus weight loss because. You get sold a whole bunch of snake oil and, and these fat burners. I'm giving it like, I wanna get, give it a zero out of 10, but like, I feel like I'm, I'm gonna just, I'm going with a one out of 10. So a one is basically like zero, right?

[00:08:19] Carrie Lupoli: What's in a fat-burning supplement? Fat burner. Thermogenic is caffeine. Lots and lots of caffeine. And the one that I was looking at, and I'm not like. Naming anybody. I just, it's like, just don't do it. The one that I was looking at had 400 milligrams. It's like drinking four cups of coffee at once, plus a whole bunch of other stimulants and ingredients, and most of them are banned in a dozen other countries.

[00:08:49] Carrie Lupoli: Now we know with like all the stuff that's coming out with all the things that are in our food in the us, like it's not surprising, right, that we can put a whole lot of other stuff in our. In our food that other [00:09:00] countries can't, but our supplements are not regulated. In fact, the supplement that I started is actually has the highest certification you can ask for, NSF, because it's actually certified for athletes to be able to take, 'cause there's nothing garbage in them.

[00:09:15] Carrie Lupoli: And so there are definitely things that you can look for in supplements. To make sure that they're not gonna have a whole bunch of those cut, those things that are banned in other countries. But here's what happens. When you take fat burning supplements or these thermogenics, your cortisol spikes through the roof 'cause of all that caffeine, your blood sugar goes on a rollercoaster, your heart starts racing.

[00:09:33] Carrie Lupoli: You feel jittery, you feel anxious. And then what happens? Then you crash hard and then when you crash, what do you ccra, sugar, carbs, all the things that you're trying to avoid. I had a client who was taking fat burners and she couldn't understand why she was binge eating every afternoon. She was like doing what I was talking about.

[00:09:48] Carrie Lupoli: I didn't know she was taking the fat burners. Right. And she was like, I, it's just like I'm eating the way you're teaching, you're teaching. I can't get rid of these cravings. And then when we dig, dive, a deep dive into her supplement choices. Her [00:10:00] body was in constant fight or flight mode. They're putting rocket fuel in a broken engine.

[00:10:04] Carrie Lupoli: You're not fixing the actual issue. You're making it worse. All right. Supplement two. Any sort of appetite suppressant. Now I can name a million of them. I want you to actually look at what it is if it is designed to make you not feel hungry. I'm giving this like, I don't know. I sat on this for a minute because I was like, I'm giving it an overall two out of 10, but I don't want you to think that is.

[00:10:28] Carrie Lupoli: Better than anything else. I'm only doing that because there could be instances where someone has been working with me for a while. I, I don't even wanna say this 'cause I don't ever do this, but like, I, I could argue an instance maybe, maybe. But in all reality, it's pretty much a one. But let's just go with two for this, okay?

[00:10:52] Carrie Lupoli: All right. This is why it makes me so angry. Okay? Hunger is not your enemy. Your hunger is, your body is like one of your check engine lights is telling you [00:11:00] something important. And when you suppress your appetite artificially, you're teaching your body not to trust its own signals. And then what happens when you stop taking these, your appetite comes back with a vengeance because your body thinks it's been starving, and then it doesn't trust you.

[00:11:13] Carrie Lupoli: So when you do eat, it will hold on. To food because it's like, listen, we don't know what's going on here. Your body wants to have a relationship with you like any other relationship. And relationships are based in trust. So I, I want you to think about this differently. Hunger means your blood sugar is dropping instead of suppressing that signal.

[00:11:30] Carrie Lupoli: But if we learned how to keep your blood sugar stable so you don't get that crazy hunger, we don't wanna get hangry. We always wanna be ready to eat, satisfied, ready to eat, satisfied, and when we can. Pair our food together, PFC three protein, fat, and carb, and have enough wherever about every three hours, have that balance where about every three hours, we're starting to feel hungry again.

[00:11:50] Carrie Lupoli: That's ideal. All right, soft love number three. I see this all the time, like a detox or a cleanse [00:12:00] product, and I saw a lot of this about like eight to 10 years ago, and then I'm seeing it come back now. Now I'm gonna give this a two out of 10 because it's not to say like that there's some of the products, it's not like it's gonna harm you.

[00:12:14] Carrie Lupoli: So like I'm giving, I'm being generous here right now. Um. The, they're just, it's like, just misinformation. It's like, it, it just, it's not doing what they say it's gonna do. Like your liver detoxes you 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It's been doing this job perfectly since the day you were born. These are products are just like expensive, kind of.

[00:12:37] Carrie Lupoli: Some of 'em laxative, but. Expensive kind of marketing, uh, expensive packaging, fancy marketing. Um, maybe you'll lose some water weight and then you'll think it's fat. You'll gain it all back in three days, and then you'll feel like a failure. But like the real detox, your body need stop. Stop putting it on a blood sugar rollercoaster.

[00:12:57] Carrie Lupoli: Stop restricting and binging, [00:13:00] stop and start fueling it consistently with like real whole food. So think about food like this. Not like good or bad, healthy or unhealthy, but food serves your body and food serves your soul. And we wanna serve our body more than we serve our soul. And then our liver's gonna really love us.

[00:13:13] Carrie Lupoli: If you really wanna do like a detox or any sort of like, I love doing lemon in my water, maybe with a little cayenne pepper. Just do that. It's like free, basically. Okay. This next supplement, I will be honest with you. I actually, a client brought it up to me and I was like, I need to research that. And this one I'm gonna give like a three out of 10 because I don't feel like it's like.

[00:13:42] Carrie Lupoli: How do I say this? I, I don't like I the fat burning ones, like the ones I'm giving, like ones and twos, like they're, they're also dangerous. Like, I was like, don't do it. Appetite suppressants, things like that. But when you look at like a, it's called CLA or a carnitine, it's. [00:14:00] A, it's like a combination of two supplements.

[00:14:03] Carrie Lupoli: If you don't know what I'm talking about, then good. Don't worry about it because it's gonna give you, like, don't even like acknowledge that it's anything that you need. But I actually, uh, had to research a bunch of stuff about it because it was only in like the last six months that I had a client like tell me that she really felt like this was something that was supposed to work really hard.

[00:14:25] Carrie Lupoli: Or really, really well. And so I, I pulled up some of the research that I did back when, uh, she was telling me about it, and it's really interesting. So like the research shows that like the CLA and it stands for conjugated linoleic acid. You don't need to know that at all. It's kind of like this naturally occurring fatty acid that.

[00:14:43] Carrie Lupoli: And like beef, it's in dairy and it kind of like, they put it together into the supplement form and they say that it can actually support lean body mass. Um, that you can have anti-inflammatory effects. Uh, antioxidant effects. There is almost no research that shows that this is [00:15:00] actually effective. And then it will often get paired along with carnitine and it's like, um, a, an amino acid, uh, and amino acid are kinda like building blocks in our body.

[00:15:11] Carrie Lupoli: Um, and you can get it in food. And that's the thing, like why take a supplement that you can so easily get in food? Uh, and it's like an amino acid that helps transport like fatty acid into your mitochondria. Mitochondria are part of your cells. Um, and it helps kind of like give you, like burn it for more energy.

[00:15:33] Carrie Lupoli: And so like the, the. Goal on this, the marketing in this is that you can burn, uh, you can burn more fat and you can boost your metabolism with it. The thing is, in all the research that I did, and I'm looking at my notes over here on the side because I was like, what? Like I really did not know a lot about it, but there's very, very little research.

[00:15:56] Carrie Lupoli: It's very like limited amounts of like consistency [00:16:00] in people, in terms of responses and like. You can spend about $300 for a year of this supplement to potentially lose like two pounds, like. It, it doesn't make any sense. There's no real science on it. It's just a, an expensive experiment. Um, and the biggest thing, and this is the thing that I was really like, why would you do this?

[00:16:24] Carrie Lupoli: It, the, the side effects are some digestive issues. So like your, your gut is your second brain. We don't wanna be doing anything that causes that. So this might not be something that a lot of you have heard about because, but I actually had, again, my client that asked me about it, and then in the last few months I've been able to speak about it a lot.

[00:16:40] Carrie Lupoli: And I realized a lot more people were taking this and I realized, so I had to put it in the list. Okay. Then there's some, like, let's do the next set of supplements that we're gonna get into. Some of them that are not terrible, they're not gonna change your life either. They're kind of like, meh, you know, that emoji, meh.

[00:16:55] Carrie Lupoli: There was that movie that, that emoji movie years ago, and I remember I walked [00:17:00] out of there like meh, because it was all about a character named Meh. That's what these supplements are like, meh. All right. Green tea extract. I, I actually drink green tea. It's fine. I, I'll give it a five outta 10 because remember, my goal here is like weight loss.

[00:17:16] Carrie Lupoli: It has some antioxidants. There's some kind of like discussion around the fact that it could boost your metabolism if like you're trying to do a, um. Something instead of coffee. I like to do green tea instead. Just like do green tea. You don't need green tea extract. It's cheaper. You get the same benefits, you're staying hydrated.

[00:17:36] Carrie Lupoli: So like I would give green tea a much higher rating, but the green tea extract the supplements that you buy, like why would you pay 30 bucks a month for something you could like pay three bucks for and like have a replacement for coffee and like, enjoy yourself with it. Okay. Supplement number six, a fiber supplement.

[00:17:53] Carrie Lupoli: Now here's the thing about a fiber supplement. We need more fiber in our nutrition. No doubt. [00:18:00] I'm giving this a six outta 10. A general fiber supplement. They can help with digestion. They can help you feel more full, but like. When it comes to weight loss, again, we cannot pretend that just taking more fiber is going to actually help that.

[00:18:17] Carrie Lupoli: And fiber supplements, you have to be really careful with there is so much garbage. Like if, like I said, I wasn't gonna call out any names, but like I will call out like a Metamucil, like, no. Now adding a little extra fiber to a shake, things like that, that's fine, but get your fiber through your food.

[00:18:36] Carrie Lupoli: Vegetables, whole Foods. You do not need to spend money on a separate fiber supplement. It's not gonna hurt, and I have recommended it to clients before, but not as a replacement for vegetables. Whole foods, high fiber food. All right, supplement number seven, probiotics not. This is where it gets a little controversial.

[00:18:59] Carrie Lupoli: Okay. [00:19:00] Probiotics, when it comes to weight loss, is that going to be an answer necessarily for, yes, it's good for gut health, which is super important, but for weight loss specifically? Now I will say gut health, like if your gut isn't healthy, nothing's gonna be healthy. But all of that comes into play with the six spinning plates.

[00:19:19] Carrie Lupoli: I often recommend a probiotic combined with the digestive enzyme. In fact, that's the supplement that I've developed because a probiotic, a prebiotic, and a digestive enzyme together is a really powerful tool for supporting gut health and balancing your blood sugar and all of those things can help with the root cause of weight issues, but it cannot be considered a weight loss supplement.

[00:19:48] Carrie Lupoli: Okay, probiotics. Only one tiny piece of the gut health puzzle for eating certain like fermented foods is really important. Balancing your blood sugar [00:20:00] through food. And I will say I almost always recommend a digestive enzyme with a probiotic, a prebiotic. Because it is really, uh, powerful, but a probiotic on it, on its own isn't gonna do what you think it's gonna do.

[00:20:13] Carrie Lupoli: All right, let's get to the top one, shall we? So this is where things get interesting 'cause the next one's I got pretty high ratings for me. Um, and so, and I wonder if anything's gonna surprise you. So this one is really, is really interesting. Number eight is magnesium. I am a big fan of magnesium. I'm giving this an eight out of 10.

[00:20:32] Carrie Lupoli: Although when it comes to health, I will give it a 10 out of 10. I love magnesium lotion. I love that it absorbs in my skin. I have been blown away by how much magnesium helps my clients. Magnesium is involved in over 300 reactions in your body. It helps with sleep, it helps with stress management, it helps with blood sugar regulation.

[00:20:56] Carrie Lupoli: It's. Incredible. Most women are [00:21:00] deficient in magnesium, especially if you've been stressed, if you've been dieting for years, if you're in menopause, when you're magnesium deficient, your sleep will suffer. I actually had a, a, a client who had sleep apnea. We work, we got her eating to balance her blood sugar.

[00:21:14] Carrie Lupoli: She still struggled with sleep. We worked on a variety of different things. And then finally, when we put magnesium lotion on. That was the game changer, and that's when everything else started getting better, because when your sleep is off, everything is off. So this is not about, to me, magnesium for weight loss.

[00:21:35] Carrie Lupoli: This is about magnesium for health. But part of the reason why I give it an eight and outta 10 is because I don't love magnesium supplements. I really like the magnesium lotion. It absorbs completely differently and magnesium always needs a buddy. When it's in a supplement form and there's so many out there, it's very confusing, and a lot of the times they don't [00:22:00] work at all as well as the fact that the labels are very misleading.

[00:22:05] Carrie Lupoli: I'm actually really good friends with a magnesium expert, and going with a magnesium lotion is much, much better. There's one particular that I really do love that I can put in the notes for you all. All right, supplement number nine, vitamin D. This is actually a nine outta 10 for me. And again, like. This is where I get myself a little confused, like weight loss versus health, but like vitamin D for women, especially for women over five is, is typically crucial for hormone production.

[00:22:32] Carrie Lupoli: Low vitamin D is linked to insulin resistant mood issues, and so that's gonna directly. Relate to losing weight. So vitamin D is essential. I mean, I found out I was deficient a few years ago. My levels were kind of out of control. Um, your levels should be basically between eight 50 and 80. So get yourself tested.

[00:22:51] Carrie Lupoli: Once I got my levels up, everything improved. My energy, my mood, my body started responding better to everything else I was doing. But don't just [00:23:00] guess, most people kind of mean maybe between like 2000 and 5,000. Um. Per day. But like I will never tell you what to do when it comes to supplements. I don't tell my clients either.

[00:23:12] Carrie Lupoli: I tell them to go get tested and go talk to their doctors about this. Okay? So the last supplement that I give a 10, outta 10 to, because I do this every day, I actually do this twice a day. Um, and I think it, again, I, I like toggle the weight versus health kind of thing, but they're so related. My favorite supplement are collagen peptides.

[00:23:32] Carrie Lupoli: It's a 10 out of 10. I think a lot of people don't realize that collagen is a peptide. There's been so much talk on peptides. I did a whole podcast on peptides. Go listen to it. But this gets out 10 out of 10 for me and like it's probably already in your smoothie. But this is why I love collagen. As we age, we lose muscle.

[00:23:49] Carrie Lupoli: Mass muscle is your metabolic currency. Uh, your connective tissue, your fascia, it's all interconnected. Your collagen kind of like. Oh, [00:24:00] like, it almost is like, um, like this, uh, net that it's kind of in between your skin and your muscles, and it's really important for maintaining muscle mass. Um, it helps with, um.

[00:24:15] Carrie Lupoli: Especially when you're combining it with strength training, uh, your strength, bone density collagen can provide the extra amino acids that we need. Um, it's the more muscle you have, the more calories you burn at rest. Even though I do not focus on calories at all, but more muscle for a woman means more health.

[00:24:36] Carrie Lupoli: Uh, but you can't just take collagen and just think you're gonna get muscle. You have to actually strength train with it. But collagen in and of itself will support skin, your joints. And this is where it's like so important, your gut health. Um, it's not like, like all of these, it's not like going, it's not about losing weight, right?

[00:24:54] Carrie Lupoli: But it will support your body's ability to be strong and healthy, which is what actually leads [00:25:00] to being able to release weight that is not serving you. So I use about, I would say I use about 10 grams a day in my morning coffee. And then I have a liquid collagen that I often take, which is another, I think it's probably about 20 grams or so, um, that I just drink.

[00:25:22] Carrie Lupoli: And it's one of my few supplements that, that I really like, I say to everybody now, check all the labels of your collagen. You wanna make sure it's as thin as possible. There's always a lot of garbage and a lot of different supplements, so think about that. Okay. Here's the thing, like supplements are supplemental.

[00:25:41] Carrie Lupoli: Right. This is not none. Even the ones I rated highly, they're not going to solve your weight loss struggles. That's because the real problem isn't that you need more supplements. They're supplemental.
