[00:00:00] Carrie Lupoli: Well, hey there, Crown Straightener. Whatever's tightening your corset, you're in the right place. Let's loosen it today. So what if I told you that one of the biggest reasons you struggle with healthy eating isn't because you don't know enough about nutrition, it's because you spent decades learning how to diet instead of learning how to take care of yourself.

[00:00:17] Carrie Lupoli: So you've learned to count, you've learned to measure, you've learned to restrict, eliminate, literally compensate, start over. You've learned how to be good on Monday and then feel guilty by Friday. But what if we replaced all of that with five simple daily systems that are going to actually work with your body and your life?

[00:00:36] Carrie Lupoli: That's what we're talking about on today's episode because I don't wanna teach you how to be better at dieting. I wanna teach you how to never need another diet again. Let's get into it.

[00:00:51] Carrie Lupoli: Well, hey there, Crown Straighteners. I am ready for today. Today is a solo podcast because I have a lot to teach you. I love having guests on, but I [00:01:00] also love that this is just an opportunity, this podcast, for me to take some of the stuff that I teach to my clients and that I dig into on a regular basis that helps you go from the corset to the crown, and take some time to actually do it.

[00:01:14] Carrie Lupoli: What is corset to crown? Well, you can see by my mug here And my best-selling book that going from the corset to the crown is actually a journey of self-discovery, a journey of self-love, a journey of health that literally never ends. And so many of us are tied to the corset, this belief system that we aren't enough as we are, that we have to prove our value, prove our worth by performing, by getting approval, by sacrificing.

[00:01:42] Carrie Lupoli: And those things that we're doing on a daily basis, a lot of the times we're trying to relieve the pressure of so much to do and so much to feel, and all the stuff that's going on, that we're actually tightening the corset. But when we operate from the crown of self-worth and we recognize that l- like I was born valuable, I was a baby, every baby that's [00:02:00] born is priceless, and I've actually been really operating from a restrictive mindset instead of one of true self-love and self-leadership.

[00:02:10] Carrie Lupoli: When you operate from the crown, you have very different results, and that's what we're gonna talk about today because the diet industry has made us kind of oversimplify the advice of what we need to be doing to get to what we want, because here's the advice. If you are skinny, if you lose weight, then the thing that you're doing is working, and there's this magical pot of gold at the end of the rainbow that's going to lead you to a healthy, happy life.

[00:02:40] Carrie Lupoli: And as someone who believed that for most of her life, who had an eating disorder, whose kids were talking about calories at five and six years old, I truly just was sucked into that corset belief that smaller is better, that our value needs to be proven, and that we need to be right. We need to defend ourselves.

[00:02:59] Carrie Lupoli: We need [00:03:00] to look a certain way. All of these pieces of the puzzle that we were taught have been stitched into us for so long that it just makes sense when a new diet comes along and it's a food plan, and they show pictures of people running in fields and laughing with their kids and just having like no stress in their life, you believe, "Oh, if I just go on this diet, then I'll get all that."

[00:03:25] Carrie Lupoli: And that's what we're really looking for, right? It's not as much about a number on a scale, but a feeling of freedom, and we don't realize that that's what we're looking for, but when we really dig in, that's what we're going after. And I was the same exact way, and then when I actually learned how to eat in the same way that I teach women now, and it, it resulted in incredible physical results, I was affirmed.

[00:03:47] Carrie Lupoli: I was 100% sure that, yeah, see that? My value isn't what I look like because people started telling me, "Oh, you look great," which is code for you look smaller, and I got more attention in the positive around what my body [00:04:00] looked like. But the crazy thing is I wasn't any more confident. I was actually more obsessed.

[00:04:04] Carrie Lupoli: I was more drawn into the idea that, oh yeah, like what I look like really matters. And so while the way that I was eating and moving my body was helping me physically, I wasn't actually healthier. I was even more unhealthy. And diets are teaching us that we need to manage our bodies versus actually understanding ourselves, loving ourselves, and living a life of purpose.

[00:04:31] Carrie Lupoli: We show up very differently for people we like than people we don't like, and the diet industry is teaching us that when you are frustrated enough, when you are really ready to restrict and punish, that's when you jump in But how do you repair a relationship based on frustration and hate and anger? You can't.

[00:04:50] Carrie Lupoli: We actually need to walk into a journey of health with a very different system, and that's what we're gonna talk about today. We're gonna talk about the five [00:05:00] daily systems that we need to be thinking about and learning and implementing daily. This isn't about anything more complicated than what you're doing, but we oversimplified the idea that, "Just tell me what to eat, then I'll be skinny, and then I'll be happy."

[00:05:14] Carrie Lupoli: Like, it doesn't work like that. Happiness and confidence don't just come because you land at a certain number on a scale. They come because you know who you are and how you're operating. I know this because in the thousands of women that I've worked with in my private practice, Disruptive Nutrition, I have seen firsthand how day one of understanding more of who you are, day one of showing up for yourself because you're starting to see love and appreciation for your body versus frustration and hatred, day one of recognizing how your thoughts and your beliefs are actually dictating your actions, day one of asking yourself why you are going after what you're going after brings in more awareness and confidence without losing a pound.

[00:05:58] Carrie Lupoli: So we're gonna dig into [00:06:00] these five systems in our life that if we can start to implement, we are going to see way, way more than anything we could ever see in a diet. Let me give you a little bit of, uh, stats for a second. There was a meta-analysis of 29 long-term weight loss studies because this is the first lesson here.

[00:06:16] Carrie Lupoli: This isn't about the system yet, but this is just the first real aha. It is called the weight loss industry. It's not called the health industry. And so we go after weight loss, and we have been slowly manipulated and brainwashed over time to believe that weight loss is the thing we should go after.

[00:06:30] Carrie Lupoli: Weight loss equals joy, confidence, peace, freedom, but that's not necessarily true. First of all, we know that, like, people with cancer, if they lose weight, they're not healthy, right? We can't just go after weight loss as a thing. We want actual true deep health. Very different than going after weight loss.

[00:06:51] Carrie Lupoli: And in 29 long-term weight loss studies, more than half of the weight loss was regained within two years, and after five years, weight [00:07:00] regain reached 80%. That means that the goal of weight loss isn't sustainable with all of those plans. But if our goal was health, it's very different because weight loss plans and diets, A, oversimplify, they make it just about food, and it's never about identity, and two, give us a plan that's about restriction, deprivation, and punishment.

[00:07:22] Carrie Lupoli: How many people are gonna stick with that? If we're actually getting healthy, our body can handle not being perfect, but in a diet you have to be perfect, and since when are you perfect? Nobody is perfect. If perfection is the requirement, well, we're all gonna fail, and oh, look, that's what's happening. So we're going to just extinguish- The diet mindset, the diet mentality, the just teach me what to eat, and we're going to replace it with these five systems.

[00:07:47] Carrie Lupoli: And these five systems are really around a, a totally, I would say, crown-oriented approach of looking at health and wellness. What do I mean by that? Well, there are different results when [00:08:00] we, when we go from the corset versus the crown. So you could have a group of people at the gym. Some are there for very unhealthy reasons, and others are there for healthy reasons.

[00:08:07] Carrie Lupoli: If you are there for unhealthy reasons, then your progress is never gonna be enough. You're going to feel like this is a, a path that requires punishment, and you're doing it for approval. You're doing it to prove your worth. That's what I mean by corset-centered behaviors, where if we are at the gym for reasons of the corset, we never feel satisfied.

[00:08:29] Carrie Lupoli: We never feel peace. We're always going after the approval of others, often at the sacrifice of ourselves. Then if we are going to the gym for the crown, however, we are doing it out of self-love, self-respect, self-leadership, knowing that in order for me to be able to truly serve my purpose and recognizing that I have a purpose to serve means I need to be the healthiest version of myself.

[00:08:52] Carrie Lupoli: I need to build strength. I need to build muscle. I need to move my body so that I can be a blessing to others. Very different way of showing up at [00:09:00] the gym. In the crown, I want to be there more because it matters more. With the corset, we get exhausted. We feel like it's one more thing to do for others. So operating with the mindset of the crown is a mindset that no diet will ever teach you.

[00:09:17] Carrie Lupoli: It's always about comparing yourself to other people or to a weight that you wish you were, and comparison is the thief of all joy. Comparison is what the corset tells us is true, and comparison actually causes a huge gap that gets in the way of confidence. So if you really kinda think about it like two mountains and like a valley in there, in order to get across the valley, you need this bridge.

[00:09:42] Carrie Lupoli: The valley is caused from comparison that literally digs a hole in between yourself and confidence, and that bridge that actually gets you from yourself to confidence is not a diet. But that's what the industry has taught us, that the diet is going to get us to this path of confidence [00:10:00] when in all reality, the only way to get that bridge is to stop comparing ourselves, to stop believing we're not enough, stop seeking approval, and actually start showing up from a very different place.

[00:10:14] Carrie Lupoli: So if you don't know already, From Corset to Crown is already a best-selling book, and it's not even out in stores yet. But I want you to have your hands on this because this is going to be a toolbox for you, a reference book, and a daily source of inspiration. It's going to teach you not only the last nutritional advice you will ever need, but it's going to teach you how in every single day life you can go from the corset to the crown.

[00:10:41] Carrie Lupoli: So if you pre-order today, you get all sorts of great things, including the e-book for free before we actually send you the actual book in October. You're also gonna get a 10-episode private podcast that I recorded only for people who pre-ordered the book, where you are going to be able to get a [00:11:00] behind-the-scenes story and perspective of all the things that went into getting to the point where I was ready to write the book.

[00:11:09] Carrie Lupoli: This is the book I needed 15 years ago, and it's one that I continuously reference. And so not only will you get the private podcast, but I got a secret little gift for you within that, as well as a discussion guide and a private community with me and other people reading the book. So go pre-order the book now.

[00:11:27] Carrie Lupoli: Share it with a friend as well. Start a book club, and get yourself moving from corset to crown. So let's talk about what these systems are. There are five systems that my clients and I are implementing every single day. Now, can you implement all of this all the time? Absolutely not. The whole point of being able to adopt something sustainable has to do with actually tricking your brain into believing that this [00:12:00] isn't, like, too hard, it's not too complicated, it's not too foreign, and we do that by literal 1% increase.

[00:12:06] Carrie Lupoli: And so when I talk about these systems, I don't want you to think about this being something so hard that you have to implement all at once. But eventually you're moving towards these five things, these five systems being a part of your daily life. So the first system is the fuel system because what we don't realize is that so...

[00:12:27] Carrie Lupoli: All the diets teach restriction, and when you actually talk about the concept of a caloric deficit, this is what 99.9% of nutritionists teach, doctors tout, and we have believed for so long that we have to be at this caloric deficit. Now, I don't wanna get into the science of whether or not you should be at a caloric deficit or not because the truth is they're not really wrong.

[00:12:48] Carrie Lupoli: But when we actually put in our brain deficit, we actually think less, so we have to eat less and less and less. So if we have to be at a caloric deficit, that means we have to eat less, and if we're [00:13:00] not losing weight because weight loss is the goal, then we must just have to eat less and eat less and eat less, and it's causing women to be totally under-fueled.

[00:13:08] Carrie Lupoli: And we have been taught this since we were in our 20s. Kids in college don't eat. Girls in college don't eat Because they believe that if they gain weight, they will not have value. And so eating less, eating less, eating less for years and years and years and years results in a system in our body that is struggling.

[00:13:27] Carrie Lupoli: And you will feel that when you get into your 40s and 50s, which is where so many of my clients end up showing up. But because we are operating from the corset for so long and we are believing lies, we are doing things that are innately unhealthy. So we're gonna stop restricting and start fueling. It's the fuel system.

[00:13:43] Carrie Lupoli: We wanna be eating consistently throughout the day with what I call PFC. It's just protein, fat, and carbohydrates. When we eat them together, that actually can balance our blood sugar. Balancing our blood sugar is our body's love language. And when you are eating to fuel your body, just like you would fuel your [00:14:00] car, the difference is incredible.

[00:14:02] Carrie Lupoli: We wanna really understand feeding our body to function and then withholding food to manipulate your weight. That's what you're trying to do when you're under-fueling. "I'm trying to manipulate my weight. I'm not actually focused on my body functioning." But when your body can function in a healthy way, when it's balanced, your weight naturally goes to where you are your healthiest.

[00:14:26] Carrie Lupoli: And so too many people are skipping breakfast. They have a badge of honor when they just push through hunger. This intermittent fasting craze drives me crazy because it's just a bougie way of saying under-fuel. Cut carbs, and that badge of honor to not eat is where the problem is. And this is one of my biggest issues with weight loss drugs, 'cause A, we talk about weight loss, not health.

[00:14:49] Carrie Lupoli: Huge red flag right there. And secondly, we're not eating. We're under-fueling, and people are like, "Yeah, but if you still work out and you eat your protein and you do all... If you do all the things, [00:15:00] you don't need the weight loss drugs because you're actually doing the things." And so why would you put your body at risk with this drug that's actually causing more and more physical issues, but also a codependency and a false sense of confidence because it's not actually getting you truly healthy?

[00:15:18] Carrie Lupoli: Your body in this fuel system needs consistent nourishment, not another reason to distrust you. All right. So we have the fuel system. We have the awareness system. Self-consciousness is a disease, and that's what the corset is keeping us stuck in. Comparison. I'm not enough. I'm literally comparing myself to others, myself to myself from earlier years, and looking at a gap that I feel like I need to fill in order to be confident, but it's that comparison that's causing the gap.

[00:15:48] Carrie Lupoli: And when we can actually become self-aware, that is health. So we wanna start understanding our body, understanding our emotions, understanding our belief systems. [00:16:00] What we believe ends up being what we do. We cannot, for a long period of time, do anything we don't believe in. So if we have a hard time sticking with something and staying consistent, the first place we have to start to become more aware of is how we speak to ourselves, how we feel about ourselves, our belief systems, and looking at when the corset was first put on us.

[00:16:19] Carrie Lupoli: I remember that my mom would brush my hair when I was little, and I would say, "Mom, it hurts," and she said, "Beauty hurts, baby." And that's the first seed that I can remember being planted that said I was not enough. And for the first 40 years of my life, I straightened my hair obsessively because I thought curly hair was not okay.

[00:16:38] Carrie Lupoli: So we need to be replacing some of the obsessive behavior that we have with actually an awareness of our hunger of our energy, of our cravings, of our moods, of how society is tricking our brain into believing truth, the patterns that keep showing up. You cannot change what you cannot see. [00:17:00] Carrie Lupoli: Self-awareness is an opportunity to be able to help you see yourself in a very different way.

[00:17:06] Carrie Lupoli: Because very often we operate with our head down, 50 tabs open at the same time, CVS receipt to-do list, and never thinking about our thinking. Self-awareness is health, and if there isn't a system for being aware with curiosity, not judgment... You cannot be curious and judgmental at the same time. So how can you start to be curious and aware of what your body is saying, what you're telling your mind, what you're putting in front of your mind, and how it's all coming together into a belief system that's actually dictating the actions versus truly knowing yourself, who you are, what you want, and why you want it.

[00:17:45] Carrie Lupoli: That changes everything. So we have our fuel system, we have our self-awareness system, we have our preparation system, and we keep relying on willpower. We keep saying, "Okay, this time I'm gonna do it. This time I'm mad enough at myself that I'm gonna stick with this." But [00:18:00] willpower is consumable, and it's also renewable, but it's not consistent.

[00:18:06] Carrie Lupoli: And willpower alone is white-knuckling your way to success, and you can only grip something for so long before you're going to have to let go. So a preparation system is where behavioral science really takes place. When you have a system versus just a routine, a routine is like what I wanna do, but a system is how you do it.

[00:18:29] Carrie Lupoli: You don't have to keep negotiating with your brain. Your brain doesn't want you to do new things And so every time you're doing something that your brain isn't used to, you will almost automatically start subconsciously questioning those decisions and work yourself out of them. But a system that you actually prepare for and implement, like a system for preparing my food, my grocery store system, for planning for my busy days, [00:19:00] understanding time, how time cannot manage me, but I manage time, digging into what is it that I need to be intentional with so that I can then act.

[00:19:12] Carrie Lupoli: What are my easy food combinations that I can grab and go with? What is my dinner planning going to be? Successfully being healthy means that I have a preparation system. It's not about discipline, it's more about how do I prepare so that I don't have to think about this stuff. We have to think about so many things, but there are ways to be able to develop preparation systems so you're not getting better at resisting temptations, but to build a life that requires less resistance.

[00:19:47] Carrie Lupoli: Okay, so we have our fuel system, our self-awareness system, our preparation system, and our recovery system is the fourth daily system that we want to work to getting to. So it's not about starting over every time, it's about returning [00:20:00] to our routines. One of the things that I love about our philosophy around eating and fueling your body is that you're never on or off.

[00:20:08] Carrie Lupoli: It's no start over on Monday. You don't eat all your calories for the day and then you're screwed. You're, you're not like done by breakfast because you ate too much and then you're like, "Oh, forget it. I'll just start again Monday." One meal doesn't ruin progress. One weekend doesn't require punishment on Monday.

[00:20:23] Carrie Lupoli: And then eating something outside of your normal routine, maybe a soul-filling meal, shouldn't equal guilt, and it doesn't mean you failed. So when you actually recognize the concept of eating PFC3, a protein, fat, and carb every three hours, it's so much of a bigger philosophy than just what you eat.

[00:20:40] Carrie Lupoli: Because I love being able to say, "Your next meal is just three hours away." That's a philosophy for life. You cannot go back and change the things that you did, but you can adjust moving forward. So if we can continuously adjust moving forward, then there's no guilt, just data about a decision we made, about how we conducted ourselves, [00:21:00] how we might have reacted, and that's where we can bring in our REAL framework, R-E-A-L.

[00:21:06] Carrie Lupoli: Recognize what just happened, right? I snapped at somebody. I emotionally decided to binge a, a meal. That is often the corset talking, a reaction because we were emotionally charged, we were upset, we were frustrated, we were anxious, we were bored, and we just wanna recognize that corset. Sometimes I say just put your arms around it, right?

[00:21:30] Carrie Lupoli: Recognize it, right? And then we're going to E, examine, and really just sort of ask yourself, "Okay, what's happening? What's my body doing? Why did I respond that way? Where am I right now?" Examine from a place of self-love versus a place of judgment. Let's be curious. So we have recognize, examine, and then align.

[00:21:49] Carrie Lupoli: Align is, like, literally let's straighten our crown here. Who am I? I want to align my next decision, my next thought around who I am. And if you don't know [00:22:00] who you are 'cause you haven't spent that time, then that's where we gotta start. That's why self-awareness system is always there, and it's always something that we're looking at.

[00:22:06] Carrie Lupoli: So we're recognizing, examining, aligning, and then leading. What's the next step for you to lead yourself? This isn't about being inconsistent. James Clear from Atomic Habits says, "It's not if you fall away from your consistency, it's when you do." The real test of consistency is consistently getting yourself back and not using one deviation from what you were planning to actually derail you for the whole week, for the whole month, for the whole year.

[00:22:37] Carrie Lupoli: It's not about never getting off track. It's about knowing how to return without punishing yourself. So that's our recovery system. Okay, a little review. The FUEL system, the self-awareness system, the preparation system, the recovery system, and then the self-leadership system. Now, what's so interesting is all of those first four systems are actually causing you to [00:23:00] lead yourself.

[00:23:01] Carrie Lupoli: It's about not making the weight the measure of your worth, but making choices from the crown that remind you- of your worth. That's why this whole thing is bigger than nutrition. That's why the oversimplification of a meal plan is what we need to just throw out the window, because it is a multi-layered ecosystem.

[00:23:22] Carrie Lupoli: Our body, our minds, they all work together. And if we think a, a meal plan of chicken and kale is going to literally solve all the pieces of the challenges in our life, we're totally misled. And this is why we feel like the diet is something separate, because then we go on vacation, or then we have a chaotic life, or then we get really busy at work, and then that diet that was outside of all the pieces of our life then has to get pushed away.

[00:23:48] Carrie Lupoli: But when we are actually developing systems within our life to become the healthiest version of ourselves, that's when change sticks, which is why the weight loss [00:24:00] identifying factor of a diet is completely misguiding everybody. We need true, deep health. We need to go from the corset to the crown, because we all have a purpose to serve, because we are all worthy, and we just forget that when we are given these sets of rules versus tools to lose weight versus actually be healthy.

[00:24:21] Carrie Lupoli: Okay, so the self-leadership system is really around recognizing who you are and leading yourself in that way. If you're a leader at home or at work and you think about your leadership style, does that parallel to the leadership style that you lead yourself in? And this is where morning time comes in, your daily declarations, your 1% philosophy, the corset to crown framework, explaining and helping you understand truly who you are, reflecting, resetting, and realigning daily so that you're not always looking back and saying, "Oh man, I wish I had done it differently," but you're starting to see how to make [00:25:00] changes in the moment and how to really align our North Star of our values, of who we are, who we say we wanna be, with the behaviors themselves.

[00:25:10] Carrie Lupoli: We're no longer making decisions because we hate our body or because we're so afraid of gaining weight. We make decisions because we value our health and the life that we're building. You don't take care of yourself because you finally earned it. You take care of yourself and lead yourself in that direction because you already matter.

[00:25:29] Carrie Lupoli: Think about now going to the gym From the place of self-leadership versus self-loathing, the results become very different. But this isn't something that you can do just overnight. This is a mindset and a belief that has to be nurtured. It's like planting a seed and watering it every day. And you do that by showing up for yourself in some way, by having morning time with yourself, by helping to find examples of how great you are, of [00:26:00] how strong you are, and how you don't have to prove that to anybody.

[00:26:03] Carrie Lupoli: The diet industry has taught us things like eating less to weigh less. But what we need to recognize is that fueling our body consistently is the key Counting calories to stay in control is not actually control. But learning how your body responds to food, how your emotions react or respond, 'cause the two is very different, that's that feeling of control, knowing who you are and showing up for the right reasons.

[00:26:29] Carrie Lupoli: And when you fall off, you are not guilty, right? The diet industry says you just need more willpower, you need more discipline, but when you build systems to support your choices, you actually don't need those things. And when you go off course, the diet industry's like, "We're just gonna start over on Monday."

[00:26:44] Carrie Lupoli: That is the mindset that we have been taught, because if we are not perfect, then we can't possibly pick back up again. But with a recovery system, the mindset is about I'm just, my next meal is just three hours later. My next choice is just around the corner, and I can look back and analyze why I did what I did, but I [00:27:00] can't go back and change it, so I'm not going to beat myself up over it.

[00:27:03] Carrie Lupoli: There are so many myths that we have to unpack when it comes to the mindset of the corset that has been led by our culture, by dieting, by the weight loss industry, and has taught us to go in a direction that actually tightens a corset more than loosens it. So as we continue to think through how we show up for ourselves, these five systems allow you, hopefully, to be able to help you see that the diet you've been going after is trying to get you to manage your body, but these five systems are going to teach you to lead your life.

[00:27:36] Carrie Lupoli: A diet will tell you what you're allowed to do, but it's these systems are going to help you understand what you need to do so that you can live a purpose-driven life as the healthiest version of yourself. These diets only actually, quote-unquote, "work," and I hate that word because, like, what does working mean?

[00:27:54] Carrie Lupoli: Well, it only means weight loss. But you are required to have a very predictable life. [00:28:00] Right there, that should be a, "That's not gonna work for me. My life is anything but predictable." So this five system mindset is actually designed to support you when life is unpredictable, not if it is, because it will be.

[00:28:12] Carrie Lupoli: A diet and the diet mindset, the diet industry, the weight loss industry makes you dependent on them and their rules, but a system helps you develop the skills and the confidence to make your own decisions. And most importantly, probably, is that this whole weight loss diet mindset makes us feel like weight loss is the destination, right?

[00:28:32] Carrie Lupoli: But- When you recognize that, sure, being healthy allows and actually is just naturally a byproduct is losing weight because your body doesn't wanna hold onto weight that's not healthy. But when you have a philosophy that makes health the pursuit, it changes the way you show up and how consistently you show up, because that's the key.

[00:28:55] Carrie Lupoli: So we're gonna replace all of that with those five simple daily [00:29:00] systems that are going to build over time, that are going to transform everything about how you show up for this one God-given life that you've been entrusted to take care of through your life container. So the goal was never to become a woman who was really good at following a diet.

[00:29:17] Carrie Lupoli: The goal was to become a woman who knows how to take care of herself no matter what life looked like, so she can truly serve her purpose. So I'm hoping that today straightened your crown a little bit, and while you're at it, go straighten someone else's. We'll see you next

[00:29:33] Carrie Lupoli: time.
